Whole Foods Wednesday – Why Are Egg Sammiches Not Good For You?!

I love food. Like, LOVE FOOD.

And breakfast sammiches rank hiiiiiigh on my list of favorites. And I could (and if my health wouldn’t suffer for it, would…) eat them every day!

But I don’t, because that’s not balance. When I start my morning with a good-for-me breakfast, most often, the rest of the day just flows much better!

I still enjoy a bagel (boy do I enjoy it!) or a breakfast sammich, because, BALANCE… but for me, my health, and my goals, that’s not the norm, and I’m grateful I enjoy, and my body responds well to, cleaner breakfasts!

Today: farina with a tsp of Maple syrup, cinnamon, apples and walnuts – so good!

Food Swap Friday – Walnuts for Croutons

Are you like me, and absolutely NEED that crunch and flavor of croutons on your salad? I know those little things are bad for me, but I neeeeeeed them!

Well maybe this swap will help me… Croutons are high in sodium, often coated in butter, and full of empty calories—around 10 per piece, which can tally up in a hurry. Obviously, not the best way to top your microgreens, right?

A healthier crunch alternative is walnuts, which are loaded with nutrients like omega-3s that are good for you, but will also help keep you satisfied, with the added bonus of fiber and protein!

Saturday Snack Spotlight – Frozen Yogurt Trail Mix Bars

Warmer weather is coming, and we tend to look towards cooling snacks in the warmer months, right? Not saying you have to rely heavily on ice cream or chase after the Ice Cream truck (ahh, memories!), but I totally get your desire for the cold stuff!

These Frozen Yogurt Trail Mix Bars are great, and not only can you create different flavors by using extracts mixed in the yogurt (or use flavored yogurt, but I steer away from those, personally), but you can also use different fruits, a variety of nuts (I have sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, peanuts, and cashews in mine), and really get tons of goodness into a little bar!

You can opt not to add the chocolate chips (I prefer mini ones, but didn’t have any on hand), but I mean, a little chocolate never hurt anyone, so don’t be afraid to live a little! 🙂

I used coconut granola to add even more of a flavor boost!

You can also opt to use ice cube trays to make these bite sized (I have the soft bottom ones that allow you to pop contents out, but a knife would get them out of a standard ice cube tray).

How do they sound?

Saturday Snack Spotlight – Clean Trail Mix

So snacks… that can withstand Florida heat but still nourish me and keep me stable. I opted to make my own trail mix and bring it, so I don’t have to worry about what’s in it, and it’s a good balance of things!

Here’s whats in it (this is portioned out into several bags)

  1. 1 cup sliced almonds.
  2. 1 cup raw pumpkin seeds.
  3. 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes (I buy them in chunks and slice them)
  4. 1/2 cup raw walnut pieces.
  5. 1/2 cup sunflower seeds.
  6. 1/2 cup raisins.
  7. 1/2 cup dried cranberries.
  8. Peanuts
  9. Cashews
Do you make your own trail mix? What do you put in it?

Tip Tuesday – Liver Cleansing Foods

After a holiday weekend of drinking (at least for some people), our livers are sometimes feeling the need for a little tune up. Nope, no surgery or awful detoxes, just some simple foods that you probably already have on hand anyways!Liver Cleansing FoodsSome pretty basic, simple stuff, but very powerful! Do you use any of these to give your liver a nice gentle flush-out? Do you have any others? As I have said, I LOVE hearing/learning new things!

Sunday Shakeology – Sweet Parfait

Happy Valentines Day! This is another “holiday” where you are inundated with chocolates and sweet treats and decadent desserts! Not the most Diabetic-friendly holiday, but such is life, right?

At least I can still get my sweet treat without sending myself into hyperglycemia!

Sweet Parfait

I do LOVE my strawberries! Similar to blueberries, I also freeze some of my summer pickings – I could subsist on strawberries if necessary – LOVE them!
