Motivation Monday – Love your Diabetes

I know how crazy, perverse, and outlandish such a concept sounds. And of course, I wish no one suffered from Diabetes. In a perfect world, there would be no diseases, no disabilities, nothing that can’t be cured. But truth be told, that is, at this juncture, not a realistic standpoint. We ARE making great strides, and getting closer to cures for ailments and whatnot, but for now, we need to learn to love the hand that we were dealt.

For instance… I love my Diabetes for the wakeup call it provided. It forced me to be honest with what I eat, how active I am, how some of my lifestyle choices could be hindering me. It opened my eyes to how even small changes can make a huge difference. It forced me to look within and find my inner strength to deal with things I dislike, such as needles, taking prescription medication (working towards no longer needing them…), limiting carbs (still a battle somedays but I have gotten smarter about it!), and a few other things. It gives me a reason, not an excuse, to exercise on a regular basis, and it provides a motivating factor (since I don’t know exactly what health issues I may face when I get a little older).

Do I LIKE being a diabetic? Well, I mean, like I said, I would prefer not to be, but in playing the hand that I was dealt, since I AM a diabetic, I’m bound and determined to control it, instead of letting it control me. It’s made me a stronger, wiser, more empathetic person. It’s made me more vocal, more knowledgable… it’s made me want to get involved more and help others who are in the same/a similar boat.

I confess to sometimes being frustrated, because truth be told, no matter how hard you try, Diabetes can frustrate just about anyone. I know I am in good company with those fleeting moments of frustration, so I try to use them to propel me forward. If you can turn a “negative” into a “positive”, you will be better off for it.

  1. Absolutely. I look at it in a positive way as all of the things that I do to stay on top of it are also reducing the possibilities of have other problems like cancer and heart disease. For that I do love my diabetes. Great post, I am reblogging it.

    1. That’s exactly my thoughts on it! It forced me into aggressive action, as opposed to passive action (I was active before but I never paid as much attention to the little things that I now know are actually BIG things!)
